5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Wait for Someone to Give You the Opportunity

The other day a client, who is well respected in her industry, was telling me about a position that she had potentially wanted at another company. As she went on to talk about it, she told me how much it bothered her that she wasn’t recruited by them for this position. She didn’t end up getting the position and was discouraged by that.

She didn’t get the position because she never applied for it.

Instead, she was waiting for them to pursue her.

Does this sound familiar?

Have you ever idly waited for someone to hand you the right opportunity?

If you have, I’m going to guess you are still waiting.

What it comes down to is waiting for someone else’s permission to follow your dreams.

I recently read parenting advice that I found to be really interesting and supported what we are talking about.

The advice said that instead of saying to our children, “I am so proud of you.” We should say to them, “You must be so proud of yourself.”

It is a small shift in language but a big difference in intention and meaning. It is shifting their minds to seek gratification from themselves instead of from others. That’s not to say we can’t ever express how we feel about them or the importance of a parent’s love. But it is interesting nonetheless, particularly because I am now seeing how much we are all seeking others gratification of our ideas, talents or skills.

Where are you noticing in your own life that you are waiting for someone else’s encouragement or support to pursue something?

5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Wait for Someone to Give You the Opportunity:

1. No one knows you better than you.

2. What is right for your life is not necessarily right for someone else’s life.

3. We are all too busy to be worrying about anyone else – most likely it isn’t a lack of support or belief – it’s plain oversight due to a busy life.

4. You are putting your faith in the wrong hands – someone else’s instead of your own.

5. In the end, it is so much more gratifying when you can say you worked hard and went after it than it is to say it fell in your lap.

I’d love for you to think about where you are waiting in your life right now. And what are you waiting for?

If there was one small step that you could commit to right now, what would it be? Something that you could do that is not dependent on anyone else’s opinion or help.

Now get out there and go for it.
